Dress Code Chart – Paul Klocke Dance

As a rule. we recommend that you obtain shoes and tights from a dancing supply store and not Amazon or non-dancing supply stores. There is a wide variety of products that we simply are not familiar with. We are aware of the quality of what the Brandywine Dance Shoppe sells. In addition, the Brandywine Dance Shoppe gives all our students a 10% discount if you state that you are from our studio. Their phone number is (302) 478-4403.

For our performances (Holiday Show, June Recital, Competitions), students will need to obtain Bloch tights of a specific style and color (usually either pink, B-tan, or a skin toned style supplied by the Brandywine Dance Shoppe). If you wish to plan ahead, either buy your tights from the Brandywine Dance Shoppe or make sure you have the correct style numbers needed for the performances before purchasing.

Clothing (Form Fitting, Solid Colors, Undergarments)

  • It is important that the teachers and the students can clearly see and correct the alignment and placement of the student’s body; therefore, except for Jazz Funk and Street Jazz classes where looser attire is allowed, all dance clothing should be form fitting and not baggy.
  • Except for Jazz Funk and Street jazz classes, each class has denoted dress code colors of either white, black or pink (see chart below). Dancewear items should be of a solid color (black, white, or pink as denoted) and not a mix of colors with words or colored patterns/stripes on them.
  • Supportive undergarments are important; however, they need to be hidden – if needed, obtain an athletic sports bra that blends in with your leotard or purchase a leotard that will completely cover a regular bra.
  • If you have a question about attire you have purchased, do not remove the item’s tags. Bring the item with you (not on you) to the studio to be approved.
  • New students, who are just trying classes, should call the studio before purchasing dance clothes. We will tell you what you may wear until you have decided on a class

Tights

  • In the past, our tight colors were either pink or tan. We now state that tights (when needed) should be pink or skin toned. However, the reality is that there is no tight color made that will exactly match anyone’s skin tone – the goal is to come close. We are not as concerned about the shade color of a student’s tights when the students are in class at the studio, but rather when they are in performances.
  • If a student needs a lighter tone of tights, the Bloch B-Tan tights, style number T0981 (that we have used in the past) will suffice. If a student needs a darker shade of tights, we recommend that the student goes directly to the Brandywine Dance Shoppe (302) 478-4403) to check out their tight selections. They have several shades available and can help you pick the shade that comes closest to your skin tone. For performances, all students in ballet numbers will need Bloch pink tights.

Shoes

  • For shoes, we recommend the following. If you have dance shoes of a different color (or style number) than is listed below, please contact the studio before buying new shoes.

Clothing Option A and Option B

  • For many of our classes, we are now offering A and B dress code options. It’s important to us that students of any gender identity are comfortable participating in our classes, camps, and workshops. Please choose the dress code option that is most comfortable for you or your child. Whichever option you choose, all items must be from within that option. For example, you may not choose clothes from option B but shoes from option A. This will also include recital costuming – i.e. if you choose option B for classes but option A for recital, you will be required to buy the appropriate option A shoes for recital.
  • Typically, Option A students wear a leotard and tights to class, and Option B students wear a T-Shirt and leggings (or sometimes joggers). Important: Leotards and tights are automatically form fitting, T-shirts and Joggers are not – they can be form fitting and they can be quite baggy. Except for Jazz Funk and Street Jazz classes, baggy clothing is not allowed. Contact the studio, before purchasing T-Shirts or Joggers. Quick guidelines for Option A and B below:

Guidelines for students choosing a T-Shirt option

  • Level B students and above must wear a solid color black form fitting specialized dance T-shirt obtained from a dancing supply store, and not wear a regular T-shirt. Both the Brandywine Dance Shoppe and the online retailer Discount Dance Supply have T-Shirts made specifically for dancers – there is a variety; contact the studio if you are interested and we will help you select a T-shirt that is appropriate.
  • Level 1, 2 ,3, & A students may wear a regular solid color black t-shirt; however, it must be form fitting and not baggy.
  • Tiny Star, Rising Star 1 and 2 students can wear either a white or black form fitting T-shirt.
  • Regardless of the level, T-shirts must either be long enough to cover the waist when doing back bends (and not ride up) or they must be securely tucked into the bottoms of whatever the student is wearing.

Guidelines for students choosing to wear Joggers

  • Joggers are not inherently form fitting – some styles are quite baggy and are not allowed – either check with the studio in advance before purchasing or keep the tags on any joggers you purchase and check with the studio to see if they are appropriate before removing the tags.
  • Joggers are NOT allowed in ballet classes at the B Level and above for any reason.
